| DESCRIPTION | |
| This layer lets you use The Timoney Group's custom web tools to upload your own custom hurricane path and subsequently analyze it using our buffer tool. Below you'll find step-by-step directions for creating your own path depending on what version of Google Earth you are using. | |

| CREATING YOUR OWN HURRICANE PATH | |
For Users of the FREE version of Google Earth For those using the free version of Google Earth, you can create a hurricane path manually. Copy and paste the code below into a text editor-- |
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.0"> <Placemark> <LineString> <coordinates> -82.40,24.09 -85.17,25.23 -88.72,25.98 -89.12,26.19 -91.70,26.80 -92.67,27.01 -92.78,27.04 -94.72,26.93 -96.66,27.02 -99.15,28.05 </coordinates> </LineString> </Placemark> </kml> |
1) Replace the longitude and latitude coordinates with your own coordinates (you can have up to 50 pairs). 2) Save the file as a plain text file with a ".kml" file extension. 3) In Windows Explorer (or Mac equivalent), double-click on this .kml file to ensure it appears in Google Earth correctly. 4) In the 'Places' panel, Right-click on the layer name and 'Save As' a .KMZ file to your hard-drive. See image below: |
You're now ready to scroll down to the "Upload Your KMZ File" section below.
For Users of Google Earth Plus or Pro For paid users of Google Earth, the process is much simpler. Go to the top menu bar and choose "Add-->Path": |
Make your path in the Gulf by clicking your mouse: when done, simply click 'OK' in the dialog box.
Save your work by Right-clicking on the layer title in the 'Places' panel and choose 'Save As' to save the .KMZ file to your hard drive: |
| UPLOAD YOUR KMZ FILE | |
Now that you've created your own hurricane path and saved it as a .KMZ file, you'll upload it to The Timoney Group's webserver so that
you'll be able to use our buffer analysis tools. If you haven't already, load the KMZ Uploader into Google Earth. In the 'Places' panel, click on the 'Upload Your Own Hurricane Path' hyperlink--you'll see a dialog pop up in the bottom of the interface: |
***If you don't see dialog at the bottom of the screen, it may have shown up in another web browser. It is
recommended that you use Google's internal browser as pictured by choosing 'Tools-->Options-->Preferences' from
the main menu bar and ensure the box next to 'Show web results in external browser' is unchecked.
In the dialog, hit 'Browse' to navigate to your KMZ file on your hard drive. Select a color and a width for your path and hit 'Send.'
IMPORTANT: Your file will be considered invalid if... 1) Your path is not actually in the Gulf of Mexico region 2) You have more than 50 pairs of coordinates 2) You have more than one path in your file Provided everything was in order, your path has now been sent back to you with the color and width you chose. |
| ANALYZE YOUR CUSTOM PATH | |
Now you can perform a buffer analysis of your own path: go to the 'Places' panel and click the 'Buffer Your Custom Path':
You'll now have a dialog pop up in the bottom of the interface with a simple dialog:
In this dialog, simply choose the following: 1) your buffer radius (up to 250 miles); 2) whether you'd like to buffer the entire path or only the portion of the path visible in the full-screen view; and 3) a color for your buffer.
**Important: If you choose to buffer only the visible path, ensure the most accurate results by orienting the screen to the north. Now say we requested a 45-mile buffer of our custom buffer: let's search on the 'Places' menu for the file that was returned: |
Clicking this link will pop up a number of tables listing wells, platforms, pipelines that are found within the buffer.
You can save your buffer and its tables to your hard drive by simply right-clicking on its title in the 'Places' panel and selecting 'Save As'. |
